Development of a sustainable data ecosystem for plant breeding
Due to technological developments, plant cultivation and the subsequent value chain have come to generate a rapidly increasing volume of data that holds value for plant breeding. This data are a basis for innovations in plant breeding and may help to increase plant breeding performance. A prerequisite for exploiting this potential is a data ecosystem based on shareable data rooms.
The BreedFides project brings together key players from science, infrastructure and industry in order to develop a model solution to the technical, legal and competitive challenges. The goal is to develop a resilient, expandable and practical concept for the shared, value-adding use of data, together with a business model for its implementation.
Effective use of existing data
In plant breeding itself, but also in its associated sectors, a wide range of different sets of data exists that might prove useful for plant breeding purposes. However, due to different data standards and a lack of interaction interfaces, this data is not readily available.
A data ecosystem for plant breeding
The purpose of the joint research project BreedFides is to develop a concept for a data ecosystem in plant breeding. The system is to be designed in a way that will enable breeding companies, research institutions and other participants in the agricultural value chain to use data individually, purpose-bound and in accordance with defined legal framework conditions.
For more precise plant breeding
A more effective use of existing data in a functioning data ecosystem has the potential to enhance plant breeding. Data-intensive breeding approaches, for example in the field of AI, BigData or genomic selection, are likely to benefit from such an approach.
Join hands to succeed
The project is designed to accommodate different needs and to maximise the benefits for all parties involved. To this end, as many stakeholders as possible from the breeding industry, from science and the plant breeding value chain shall be involved in the conceptual phase. This will also be reflected in a diverse project consortium.
