Join hands to succeed

The project is designed to accommodate different needs and to maximise the benefit for all parties involved. To this end, as many stakeholders as possible from the breeding industry, from science and the plant breeding value chain shall be involved. The topics and primary concerns dealt with in the BreedFides project can be grouped into organisational/legal issues on the one hand and technical project components on the other.

In a first step, wheat will be used as an example for dealing with the issues and tasks to be discussed in the project. However, this is only the first step. Ultimately, the concept will be developed irrespective of the crop type and thus will apply to any crop.

Fundamental to any data ecosystem is the agreement on and establishment of suitable data standards to ensure data compatibility. Trust and transparency are the mainstay of the system. It needs to be ensured that data in the system is used exclusively under the conditions defined by the respective data provider. The data provider must be able to freely determine the purpose, duration, type and partner of a data use, so that he will at all times maintain control over his own data. For this purpose, the project will create a suitable legal framework that is binding to all participants. In addition, model contracts will be developed that can be used to legally secure specific cooperations based on data from participants in the system.

On the technical side, digital infrastructures must be developed so that the legally secured exchange of data can take place in a trustworthy and user-friendly manner. This includes secure identity management, but also e. g. the technical implementation of a catalogue environment where information on the potentially available data records will be published. The specific data, on the other hand, should not be stored in a central data repository. It should always remain with the data provider and only be made accessible with his consent and under his terms. In order to be able to benefit from data from adjacent sectors, other relevant data ecosystems will also be identified and interfaces thereto will be developed as well.
